Deadline Detroit | Readers Share Plague Masks That Are Also Fashion Accessories

Karen Dumas (top), Paddy Jones (left) and Katie Baker show how to stand out while staying safe.

A handful of Deadline Detroit enthusiasts are accepting our invitation to show off what they’re wearing outside of quarantine these days.

The nose and mouth should be covered, but the new look doesn’t have to be dull or generic. After all, Gretchen Whitmer didn’t sign an executive order requiring socially undistinguished face wear.

“Self-expression lends itself to any blank canvas,” Berlin-based journalist Graeme Campbell wrote on a style site called High Snobiety on Monday. “It goes without saying that some masks are cooler than others.”

Shannon Haag recently made 35 “lovingly sewn face masks for friends and family”.

So no white painter’s masks or pale blue surgical dressings for these local stylists, Nuh uh. They recognize this thing not to leave the house as a fashion accessory, just like scarves, glasses frames and hairstyles are a chance to show their personality and flair. (OK, maybe not hairstyles right now.)

We hope these will also inspire you to show how you put a distinctive face forward at a time like no other. Post a selfie on our Facebook Where Twitter or email one to [email protected]

And remember, let’s be careful out there.

It should be week four of the baseball season, so Barbara Blumenfeld and Shannon Haag (right) are putting their team loyalty where their breath is.
